Chihyung Jeon

Professor Chihyung Jeon was a Fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society in Germany from 2016 to 2017. In 2018, he taught a graduate course on robotics and society at the University of Vienna.

His current research focuses on the relationship between humans and technology in sociocultural contexts, as well as policy issues arising from human–technology–society systems. He is particularly interested in human experiences of control, autonomy, intimacy, anxiety, and loneliness in relation to machines. More recently, he has organized and led a.human (인조인간연구회), a research group exploring non-traditional forms of humanity, including artificial, augmented, and alternative humans.

In 2017, he participated in the launch of Epi, a quarterly magazine that takes a critical perspective on science, technology, and society. Since 2016, he has also regularly contributed columns on science and society to Hankyoreh.

Beyond his research activities, he participated in the investigation of the 2014 Sewol Ferry Disaster and contributed to the preparation of the official report of the Special Investigation Commission published in 2018. He also established the Sewol Classroom website, an archive of photographs and materials related to the Sewol Ferry Disaster, as part of his efforts to preserve public records and social memory.
